Attuned to sound and movement, Johanna transforms the energies within music into expressions on a canvas. Her abstract work began with a dance performance that left her reeling with inspiration. She listened to its music again and again until she swam in it, until it directed her movements and brushstrokes, transferring its power through her and into the paint.
Later, listening to her grandfather's recitals of Rahmaninov from the 1960’s and 70’s, time traveling with him and seeing his hands on the piano keys, she embodied them through her own hands holding a brush.
Painting unshackles her from the pressures and expectations of the outside world and allows her to play freely. Johanna seeks authenticity in her work, and the opportunity to share the fruits of her explorations free of fear and expectation.
